Fair Coverage for Mental Health

NAMI PBC is conducting a survey on our members’ experiences with attempting to have mental health services covered by an insurance company or Medicaid.

We will use this information to advocate for fair and equal mental health insurance coverage in Florida.

Please share your experience with mental health parity

  • In the past year have you been told by your insurer that you had to pay a higher deductible amount or a higher co-payment for you or your loved one’s mental health needs for in-network care than for other types of illnesses?
  • In the past year have you been told by your insurer that you had to pay a higher deductible or co-pay for mental health needs for out-of-network care than for other types of illnesses?
  • In the past year have you had your insurer set a limit on the number of days you or your loved one could stay in a treatment facility or number of times you could consult with your mental health provider?
  • In the past year have you had to argue with your insurer to persuade the insurer to cover mental health needs recommended by a doctor or other mental health professional?
  • In the past year have you been required by your insurer to pay higher deductibles or co-pays for your mental health/substance abuse prescriptions than for your other prescriptions?
  • In the past year have you had your insurer require you to try a less expensive treatment before being allowed to have the treatment recommended by your doctor?
  • In the past year have you had your insurer refuse to pay for residential mental health treatment recommended by your doctor?
