NAMI/PBC is pleased to announce that the Family Support Group at the West Boca Library, 18685 State Road 7, Boca Raton,  is again being held on the first Tuesday of every month at 6:30pm.  Our Family Support Group at the Hagen Ranch Road Library, 14350 Hagen Ranch Road, Delray Beach, is also being held on the second Wednesday of every month at 6:30pm.  These two meetings need your support.   Please contact the NAMI office for directions at 561-588-3477.  Take advantage of these free support groups, even if you’re not in crisis, your experience can help others.  Pay it forward!

Florida is about to enact draconian cuts to the mental health care system this week.  If the Florida State Budget were to be based on the Senate Bill instead of the House Bill, some estimated 210 million would be cut from the State budget. This would have a catastrophic effect on Palm Beach County.

Our county’s mental health services have been instrumental in determining people’s recovery and their success at leading productive lives. Reducing funding for these services would create mammoth costs for our systems in the long run. There would be a rampant and costly use of ER’s and the criminal justice system, as well as an increase in homelessness.  This would have serious consequences for the lives of people with brain disorders and their families.

 At stake are losses of outpatient psychiatric care, case management, residential programs and other key mental health treatment services. An estimated 180,000 adults would be directly affected and there would be job loss consequences for some 4,000 people in the State.

The budget committees are working towards a compromise. Now is the time for concerned citizens to call or email their Florida legislators and ask them to support the House Bill.

The NAMI Family-to-Family Education Program is a free, 12-week course for family caregivers of individuals with severe mental illnesses. The course is taught by trained family members.  All instruction and course materials are free to class participants.Over 115,000 family members have graduated from this national program. Current information about schizophrenia, major depression, bipolar disorder (manic depression), panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, borderline personality disorder, and co-occurring brain disorders and addictive disorders.

• Up-to-date information about medications, side effects, and strategies for medication adherence.
• Current research related to the biology of brain disorders and the evidence-based, most effective treatments to promote recovery.
• Gaining empathy by understanding the subjective, lived experience of a person with mental illness.
• Learning in special workshops for problem solving, listening, and communication techniques.
• Acquiring strategies for handling crises and relapse.
• Focusing on care for the caregiver: coping with worry, stress, and emotional overload.
• Guidance on locating appropriate supports and services within the community.
  Information on advocacy initiatives designed to improve and expand services.

Peer to Peer Education Course Begins

 April 9, 2011

The next NAMI/PBC Peer-to-Peer Course will be launched on Saturday, April 9, 2011 from 2:00-4:00 pm in the NAMI/PBC offices located on 1520 10^th Ave. N., Ste D, Lake Worth, FL 33460. The course is a free transformational 10-week course which is taught by peers in recovery. The course allows peers to learn from other peers,  in an interactive class setting, cutting-edge information about mental illnesses and brain chemistry, stress reduction,  relapse prevention and advance directives for hospitals. There will be a hiatus in the summertime regarding the scheduling of Peer-to-Peer Courses and the next course will be held in the fall at a date to be determined. The Caridad Health Fair

The CARIDAD Health Fairwill be held by the Prevention Education and Treatment Program at the CARIDAD Center on Saturday, April 16, 2011 from 9:00-1:00 pm. The location will be 8645 Boynton Beach Boulevard, Boynton Beach, FL 33472-4415 – (561) 737-6336. NAMI/PBC will provide outreach services at the Fair in both the English and Spanish languages through the manning a of a NAMI/PBC resource table. The fair is expected to cover multiple services for and the holistic health needs of the diverse populations of the County.

Palm Beach County Health Department Annual Healthcare Health Fair for the Homeless

On Wednesday, April 27, 2011, a Palm Beach County Health Department Annual Healthcare Health Fair for the Homeless will be held from 8:30-2:00 pm. at the West Palm Beach Health Center located on 1150 45 Street, West Palm Beach, FL 33407. NAMI/PBC will man a resource table at the Fair.
